The innovative Portuguese filmmaker Rita Azevedo Gomes weaves a poetic cinematic essay through the eyes of Irma, a woman who, twenty years after her first journey across the Aegean Sea, retraces her steps, accompanied by three young men. In this elegiac quest for the Greek ideal and ode to contemporary Greece, the film ‒inspired by a short story by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge and the filmmaker’s own experiences‒ creates a collage of narratives, where poems by Cavafy, Pavese, Camus, and Byron intertwine with encounters with figures such as Maria Farantouri. With a contemplative rhythm and a sensory approach, Gomes explores the Greek landscapes while reflecting on the relationship between the individual, history, politics, and society. The film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at FIDMarseille.
