Filming an autobiographical science fiction film, director Guido Anselmi is running out of inspiration. He is paralyzed by a total, existential crisis about his producer and his partners, his wife and his mistress, the cardinal and the elegant clients of the wellness center where he takes refuge. His memories and imagination "set up" a wonderful carnival of dreamlike figures of the unconscious, leading him to the dubious realization that the meaning of life is love, while the meaning of creation is simplicity and sociability. Incor - porating into the fluidity and craftsmanship of the narrative forms of the cinematic avant-garde and memories of the great novel tradition (R. Musil, J. Joyce), Fellini in his monumental self-referential masterpiece achieves what his hero is incapable of achieving: the finest self-portrait of the artist in a creative impasse and the "absolute" identification of the director with his protagonist.
