BABYLON

This is a film adaptation of the famous theatrical play by Dimitrios Vyzantios, which was written in the years following the Greek Revolution of 1821, and which, together with the play The Employee by Chourmouzis, comprise the foundations of modern Greek theater. Its subject is the lively vernacular dialect that every area of Greece developed during the Byzantine and post-Byzantine years. Thus, in a taverna in the capital of the newly established state, Nauplion, some men from various parts of Greece are relaxing and enjoying themselves. Among them are: a man from Chios, an Arvanitis, a man of letters, a man from Morias and a man from Crete, Manolios, who is in love with Garoufalia, the beautiful daughter of Bastias. During the merriment, a fight broke out over Garoufalia, and the Arvanitis wounded Manolios in the hand. The police officer Georgios Fantes, from Eptanisa (the Ionian islands), tries to figure out whether the entire incident was premeditated or accidental. Because he can’t understand anything of what he is told, his orders are that everyone be arrested and taken to prison, from where they are released as soon as the cause of the incident becomes clear.
