Following the departure of her beloved Alkis (who migrated to America, asking her, however, to wait for him), Lela goes back to her home where she lives with her drunkard father, her heartless stepmother and her two younger siblings who go begging every day here and there. Lela lives cooped up, confined by her stepmother, doing all the housework and often writing to Alkis, whom she is impatiently waiting to return . Her stepmother, however, together with a friend of hers, plan to marry her off to a wealthy Arab, but in the end they won’t succeed. Lela, faithful to Alkis, goes through hell, but in time she is vindicated.
