HORSE CARRIAGE (THE)
Orestis Makris selling and Giorgos Tsitsopoulos buying cigarettes in a scene from Ntinos Dimopoulos' film The horse carriage
Poor coach driver Orestis Makris is badly hit by technology and the domination of the car. He is forced to leave his job and sell cigarettes to scrape a living. Athena co-stars in the film. Marios Ploritis comments in "Eleftheria", in 1957, "It is biased neither towards satire nor social analysis – there is only a hint of the melodramatic here and there. It has grace, humanity and compassion. It could even be said that it has realism, as it makes no attempt to hide social reality under shallow sentimentality".
