It says in the programme that the director's love for painting and the interesting thematic content of Pierre La Mure's book on the life of the great painter Henri Toulouse Lautrec motivated T. Huston to go beyond a mere compilation of biographical notes and "adapt" some of Lautrec's works for the screen, given that Huston himself possessed two of the artist's paintings. The programme describes the end result as "unsurpassed", not only because of the director's superb coaching of the actors, but, most of all, because of the "innovative photography", which assigned colours to the faces according to their character, so that each frame of the film looked like a painting itself.
