Credits (with a note that the film is based on Maxim Gorky's eponymous novel).
The programme includes an extensive coverage of the plot, which centres on a strike at factories in Russia under the tsars and its impact on the protagonists' families. It says that it is Pudovkin's first major film, which demonstrates to the audience "the scientific method of breaking a scene down to its constituent parts" and "the use of parallel references with interstitial scenes" and is characterized by the filmmaker's marked lyricism, as "the collective experience of the revolution is expressed through the individual adventures of its protagonists". The programme also reports the director's viewpoint: "Above all", Pudovkinsays, "I wanted to become detached from the style of Kulesof or Eisenstein; I didn't want to resort to their cold expressionism. I was only interested in man as part of a bigger picture that could account for the atmosphere and historical developments".
In addition, Pudovkin's technique is compared to Eisenstein's, especially regarding the coaching of the cast. The programme praises the coaching of tried theatre actors and concludes with the epithets "incarnation" and "the spirit of the Revolution" for MAT.
