The programme refers to the Russian cinema in its infancy and the first film to be shown, first in St. Petersburg, in 1896, and then in Moscow; Maxim Gorky's encouraging viewpoint; the early attempts by Russian filmmakers in 1906-7.
It also refers to filmmaker A.O. Drancov, who managed to convince even Tolstoy to be filmed and write film scripts. The programme stresses the contribution of the pioneer M.A. Maitre, who directs this "romantic story" in 1910. The programme concludes with a comment on the importance of ΜΑΡΑ, which is described as a "museum piece, not only because it is one of the earliest Russian productions, but also because it is a record of the performance of great stage actors at the time'.
