Credits
The programme describes ‘From the Life of the Marionettes’, a film made in Germany, as "one more in-depth probe into the penetralia of the human soul", one of the last productions of the celebrated filmmaker, "one of the two or three great Christians and existentialists of the cinema". Bergman is next compared to Bresson and Dreyer, two other "great believers/non-believers". There is a synopsis of the film, which belongs, according to the programme, to the filmmaker's third and "darkest" period. The film begins with the murder of a young whore by a married young man, whose dreams help him to escape harsh reality. The programme ascertains that the "unattainable dream" provides a convenient escape route in films like this, as the prospect of "patient self-sacrifice" is rather hard to swallow. Finally, it praises Sven Nykvist, Bergman's life-long photographer, for "a superb outcome".
