The programme analyzes from the beginning the plot of the film, featuring Maddalena, a woman of the people, as the heroine (a role tailor-made for the leading actress Anna Magnani), who, after having done everything imaginable to make her daughter a movie star, realizes – literally – at the door of Cinecittà and before signing the contract, the “futility” of cinema and returns to her poor neighbourhood.
The presentation emphasizes the ability of the director, who “without blood and thunder and big speeches” – and by alternating comic and tragic elements - reproduces the world on two levels: the realistic one of everyday life in post-war Italy and the imaginary one of illusions in the world of cinema. In concluding, the programme speaks highly of the “worthy” collaborators surrounding the director, among them Cesare Zavattini, formerly the full-time associate of Vittorio De Sica.
