The programme starts by giving a brief description of the plot, which outlines the life of two siblings developing an erotic bond between them in their effort to maintain a “lost, dead world” - with tragic consequences for the family. We are also informed that the action takes place in Volterra, a strange Etruscan city almost suspended in air. The programme considers the film an “elegy for the lost dreams of youth [and] the balanced life”, which “mainly addresses the subconscious”. Claudia Cardinale is again the leading actress, as she was in “The Leopard (Il Gattopardo)”.
The final note mentions the Golden Lion that the film won in the Venice Film Festival in 1965.
