Credits (and reference to François Truffaut, on whose idea the film was based, to Claude Chabrol, artistic advisor, as well as to the Prix “Jean Vigo” that the film was awarded in 1960) The programme begins with the information that the film is the first full-length film by Godard, who used this type of “noir” police thriller employed by Renoir. It continues with the plot, which deals with the conventional story of a petty criminal (Jean-Paul Belmondo). The story is one of those that abound in American cinema, namely, that of an ordinary man beyond pretense, “born and bred a victim” of this world. It notes that by featuring such an exposed character and using such a revised time structure, which was the principal characteristic of the New Wave, he unleashes a frontal attack on bourgeois cinema”. The imaging in the film is pioneering; the structure of the film time is revised; the shots appear “without any relation to each other”, functioning dialectically in their adversarial course. The programme concludes by praising Raoul Coutard (photography) and the leading actor Jean-Paul Belmondo.
