Credits The programme, written by Mona Mitropoulou, starts with a brief presentation of the mission of film archives “which, as treasuries of the world’s memory […], test the value of their creators as well”, placing Blake Edwards among those who overcome temporal boundaries and social restrictions, touch the heart and sensitivity and stimulate the viewer’s mind” and make him “laugh at his own misfortunes, conceit and selfishness”. The programme informs us that with THE GREAT RACE, a film that takes place in 1908, “Edwards satirizes the obsession with records”. The main characters are: a “crazy” record-seeker (Tony Curtis), a serious professor and competitor (Jack Lemmon) and a pretty but equally crazy reporter (Natalie Wood). After underlining the brilliant performances of the three protagonists, the programme concludes with the observation that this comic trio “succeeds in rendering all the desperate effort of the 1960s to forget the terrible memories of the Great War and reaffirm the victory of good over evil”
