Credits (and references). The programme, written by Mona Mitropoulou, gives a detailed analysis of the plot – the story of the life and dreams of marriage of three girls who share a room in the ‘Worker’s Dormitory’ in the Moscow of 1958. The film follows the course of their life and friendship 20 years later. The programme underlines the similarity of the film with “a Hollywood character film”, since the characters are “traditionally bourgeois, and that provides the film with a decidedly biased perspective in this typically socialist country”. It concludes with the characterization of the film as “an enjoyably faithful rendition of what it means to be Russian” that comprises, without aspiring to, the proof of the continuation of certain moral and ethical traditions, bourgeois in their origin , with both the good and bad meaning of the word ‘bourgeois’ – and with its wider implications”. The film won the Oscar for best foreign film in 1980.
