The programme begins by mentioning that the film, based on the work of Thackeray, is an "visual" and “social document", which “wonderfully” transfers the atmosphere of England in the 18th century to the screen. It also briefly mentions the plot, which describes the successful course of a young Irishman, Barry Lyndon, who finally is ruined when his ambition is transformed to selfishness and greed. The programme also underlines the “help of Kubrick’s skillful collaborators” in photography, set-design and the costumes that contributed to the reconstitution of the era with a "painterly" eye (e.g. the landscapes refer to paintings by English painters).
