The programme begins by summarizing the plot of this “black comedy” which describes the adventures of a word processor, Paul, who is searching for the girl he met at a café. It also gives the director’s own view of the film, as it was excerpted from the book by the British professor Ian Christie "Scorsese on Scorsese": "[...] when I came back to New York I got the screenplay of After Hours. It was written by Joseph Minion, who was a student at the University of Columbia. His professor was then Dusan Makavejev, who had actually given it an A [...]'After Hours' is, in a way, a variation on Hitchcock’s style. As years went by, his films gained an even greater sentimental value for me.” The film was awarded first prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and although it wasn’t a big commercial success, it gave a new boost to the director’s career.
