The programme begins by describing F.W. Murnau as the most important director of the German cinema. NOSFERATU, A SYMPHONY OF TERROR – that’s the full title of the film – faithfully brings Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” to the big screen.
Throughout the text a number of comments by important theorists of the cinema on the film are included: Béla Balázs, Siegfried Kracauer, Adonis Kyrou as well as the words of the German philosopher Heine who summarizes the spirit of the film: “leave horror and the delirium of madness, fever and the Kingdom of ghosts to us, the Germans. Germany is the country which suits witches and Golems of any type”.
Then, it refers to the plot of the film and its virtues, which are briefly recited as follows: wonderful visual ideas (e.g. Nosferatu’s giant shadow spreading over the city) and ideas for the plot (e.g. he brings the plague along, the biggest fear at the time), the outdoor cityscapes combined in a sensitive montage that indicates the participation of nature in the drama, the architecture of the film, the lens of Fritz Arno Wagner that contributes to the feeling of the grotesque using strange shooting angles, the performances and the make-up. NOSFERATU is considered an expressionistic film, mainly because of its theme and less on account of its décor – which is, for the most part, realistic, with the exception of the outdoor shots.
