The programme presents the film, which, even though a low-budget independent production, became one of the greatest successes and made the director and actor Dennis Hopper a symbol of an entire generation, away from the conformism of Hollywood “who, together with Billy and George travel around with their motorcycles looking for the elusive America” The film symbolizes the self-defeating nature of the American struggle that arises during the Vietnam war. Via the panoramic landscapes we see, on one hand, the conservative South with the intense hatred for any kind of minority or different ideology and, on the other hand, the representatives of a rebellious generation that tries to find a way out in drugs and alcoholism on a journey “that travels from the brightness of drama to the knowledge of death”. Finally, the programme gives a brief retrospective on the acting and directorial career of Dennis Hopper.
