The programme begins with a reference to the career of the director Sergei Yutkevich and his attraction to Shakespeare. The director approaches Shakespearian drama from a completely personal perspective with the result that his characters appear new and original, liberated from every kind of traditional cliché. He emphasizes anti-racism and class distinctions through the performance and actions of the actor: his Othellο is a living creature passionate for peace. Then there is a reference to the grand performance of the film’s protagonist Sergei Bondarchuk, in comparison with those of Welles and Olivier. The performances of the other actors are similarly mentioned.
