The notes begin with a reference to the novel of the same name by E. M. Remarque, which was tremendously successful in its time (after WWI). Then, it makes reference to the impact of the two world wars on societies, which, with the memory of the first war still fresh in their minds, could not imagine a second. Years later, after WWII, and after it had already been made into a film in 1930 and into a T.V. series, Delbert Mann shot a new version of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. His film, however, fell short of the earlier version, not from the standpoint of directing, but because of the fact that, from the time of the first production until the filming of N. Man’s new version, a number of catalytic and terrible experiences had so scarred mankind that hope for the future of the world, as Remarque had presented it, no longer existed.
