The programme presents the story of the first post-war film by Kurosawa and the socio-political climate in which the events of the film unwind. The film contains references to actual persons (a professor who is expelled from the university and a graduate student who is arrested for international espionage and who dies in jail), while the central figure in the film is a woman, Yuki. Through the portrait of this unyielding woman, as well as through his depiction of actual historical events, the director shows the troubled period of modern Japanese history, which lasted from 1933 until 1945, and condemns both war and fascism.
