The notes, written by Mona Mitropoulou, begins by pointing out that in this film “Bergman unfolds his entire Swedish heritage, strained through the fine cheese cloth of his Christian ethics and his charged conscience”. Then follows the plot, based on a Swedish legend of the 14th century that became a ballad with the title: “Tore's Daughter at Vange” and is about the rape and murder of the girl by three goat herders, and her father’s revenge. The notes also mention the religious dimension, the fight between good and evil, as well as the severe scene in which the father kills an innocent young boy who had witnessed his daughter’s murder – a scene reminiscent of the child-abuse in modern “civilized” societies.
