The notes begin with a reference to the director Marcel Carné’s biographical information and filmography. Then follows a critique of the film, which is characterized “as one of the great works in the history of French cinema’, a joint-creation by Carné and the the screenwriter- dialogist Jacques Prévert: “Because here Art is revealed in an austere cinematic composition, between sound and silence, movement and stillness, image and imagination, speech and spirit. Behind every incident in the film a drama unfolds: of the expression and silence, of speech and gesture, of theatre and reality. The multifold complexity of the film, which is constantly active on these two levels, comes from its almost metaphysical structure”. Finally, the programme mentions that some of the greatest actors of the French theatre and cinema have roles in this film.
