The notes, written by Mona Mitropoulou, begin by expressing her concern regarding the limits of documentary and imagination, which, after World War I, have been transcended. Then, special reference is made to Frédéric Rossif and his views on the “Kingdom of documented testimony”. It continues with the presentation of the film, which comprises an amazing depiction of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), and the bitter lesson of “how one wins by dying”, through a composition of original images filmed by internationally distinguished cameramen. The added images are by Georges Barsky. Finally, the programme notes that some of the most famous voices of French cinema are heard in this film, “which help us approach a war of conscience and a fierce, not simply Spanish, ordeal”.
