The notes begin by noting that the Greek Film Archives presented, for the first time, “Ivan’s Childhood” at the Asty cinema in 1963, and hasn’t stopped paying tribute to the director of the film Andrei Tarkovsky, “one of the greats of modern cinema”. Tarkovsky, have spent his own childhood in a time of war, and believing that childhood is the time that shapes the character of a person, is charmed by Ivan’s story, a child who becomes an orphan when war breaks out, and, in order to avenge for death of his family, becomes a spy. Despite the efforts of the soldiers to send him to school, he goes back to the front and is lost during a dangerous mission. The viewpoint of little Ivan becomes the inspiration for the creator’s first film, and, as a result, he composes a hymn to life opposing the atrocity of war. Finally, as the programme notes, it is faith in humans and the good they hold inside them that reigns in the film.
