The notes thoroughly present the plot of the film by Mauritz Stiller: a young host, with a despotic mother, who is in love with the daughter of two buffoons and tries to save his “old” mansion, gets into the reindeer business, an inclusion influenced by a documentary on reindeers, provoking the objection of Selma Lagerlöf, on whose novel the film was based. During the transport of a large herd, he falls unconscious on the ice and loses his mind, but after numerous adventures he regains his senses and his loved one. In Stiller’s film, as in Bergmans’s “The Naked Night” and Fellini’s “La Strada”, which are mentioned as Stiller’s successors, “fantasy is interwoven with documentary, and the wonderful use of the Circus atmosphere influenced several of the greatest directors. The unique images convey to the viewer the message that “the imaginary and the real can become one”.
