“RIFIFI”, a milestone in the career of Jules Dassin as well as in the mythology of French film-noir, marked the end of the director’s American period, forcing him from America and McCarthy’s blacklist and bringing him to Europe, where he later became involved with Melina Mercouri. RIFIFI, a cinematic adaptation of Auguste Le Breton’s novel, is a “wonderful film of suspense and detective adventure” that renders the legendary robbery in a way that other films will often imitate. Great performances by Jean Servais, Robert Hossein, Jules Dassin himself, and introducing Magali Noel -singing the song of the same name.
