Roberto Rossellini is ranked among the leading directors of the neo-realist cinematic movement that developed in Italy after the end of World War II, together with Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica and the Taviani brothers. In his film “ROME, OPEN CITY” the story unfolds, as the title indicates, in Rome in 1944. A group of indignant citizens, among them an editor and a priest, decide to resist the Nazis. The programme mentions that, since the director didn’t have the money needed to shoot the film, he managed to complete it with the aid of his friends, actors and directors who also helped with the scenario. Starting from his original idea to make a short film, in the end he managed to create a full-length feature, which, although poor in technical devices, nevertheless, constitutes the forerunner of a new cinematic style within the context of the neo-realist movement. Public and critics, not being able to decode this new kind of filmmaking, firmly disapproved of the film when it was first screened in 1945.
