The free adaptation of Shakespeare’s two plays offers Akira Kurosawa the chance to express his personal beliefs. With his film “THRONE OF BLOOD”, based on Macbeth, the director surprises the western world – used to grand cinematic versions of Shakespeare’s plays – with his cinematic austerity. In the film RAN, which is Kurosawa’s version of King Lear, the Japanese tradition is integrated in a very bold way, starting from scenes of idyllic simplicity to “baroque” battles, coming to a catalytically simple ending. The Japanese director doesn’t just take a stand regarding the themes of the two Shakespearean plays but throughout his entire oeuvre addresses the theme of power. He also makes daring changes to the genre by introducing elements from the Japanese NO theatre.
