Joseph Losey’s "KING AND COUNTRY" tells an antiwar story from the time of World War I, having as a hero a young deserter who faces execution.
Losey loves to deal with the topic of justice, and has done so many times in previous films, fighting obsolete social institutions. We should bear in mind that, chased by McCarthyism himself, he left his hometown and settled in England in 1952, where he has lived for the rest of his life.
Although the film features Dirk Bogarde, whose performance in “THE SERVANT” was sublime, Tom Courtney finds himself in one of the best moments of his career. The film was shown in Greek theatres, where it went unnoticed.
In the program the rest of the director’s filmography is mentioned: “THE SERVANT”, “THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR”, “ACCIDENT”, “THE GO-BETWEEN” and “THE ASSASSINATION OF TROTSKY”.
