“THE GRAPES OF WRATH” is included among the four great classic films of John Ford, even though they belong to different genres: “THE INFORMER”, “STAGECOACH” and “THE LONG VOYAGE HOME”. Nunnally Johnson’s scenario is based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck. Ford “praises the bravery, the directness, the evil man’s fear of punishment the lonely man’s bitter independence” in an “epopee of outcasts". The film depicts the immigration of impoverished farmers, victims of the Great Depression of the 1930s, from Oklahoma to California. During their journey, the film reveals their personalities, ambitions and dreams that seem eternal and universal. The film won two Oscar Awards: Best Director for John Ford and Best Supporting Actress for Jane Darwell. Of great interest is the writer’s statement that for Ford, a master of the silent cinema, the transaction to talking films was a milestone, as it gave him the opportunity to say a lot in only a few words.
