The notes begin by observing that, in the 1970s there were two films that pointed out the fact that, beyond their political differences, the East and the West had something in common. These films are Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY” and Andrei Tarkovski’s “SOLARIS”. The idea that the everyday problems between the East and the West could be overcome is expressed in a more rational way by Kubrick and in a more emotional way by Tarkovski. A detailed presentation of the film’s plot follows: on the dark planet Solaris, a kind of bizarre intelligence seems to direct the astronauts. The information, however, is vague and classified. After the mysterious disappearance of one of the three scientists, the central hero, Kevin, is asked to find an astronaut psychologist to fill in for him. Reaching the space station, he finds everything ruined, and the surviving scientists are acting strangely. When he comes face to face with his long-dead wife, he starts to recollect his childhood and the people he lived with - and feels nostalgic.
