The programme notes begin by observing that Hollywood, with the exception of great American composers, rarely employed European composers such as Johann Strauss, Robert Schumann or Richard Wagner. Therefore, a special distinction was achieved by Chopin, the great Polish composer, when, in 1945, Hollywood dedicated a major production to his life and his tempestuous relationship with George Sand. In the film “CHOPIN” by Charles Vidor, historical reality is overshadowed by the focus on the two central characters, played by Cornel Wilde and Merle Oberon.
