The film “SACCO AND VANZETTI” by Giuliano Montaldo bears as its title the names of its two Italian protagonists: Nicola Sacco (Riccardo Cucciolla) and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (Gian Maria Volonté), who are immigrants in America. The film tells the true story of the anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti as it unfolded in 1920 in Massachusetts: one was a cobbler, the other a fish-monger, who found themselves caught up in the murder of a factory worker. There was not a single eyewitness to testify against them, and only the tiniest shred of circumstantial evidence (they had asked to rent the car used by the robbers of the factory) – but they had a history: during WWII, they had demonstrated against the War. The story takes place in a time of great antipathy to anarchists, in which class interests desperately persecuted every liberal movement or group. The text is by Mona Mitropoulou.
