The programme begins with a short review of the history of Yugoslavian cinema, which, from its earliest years, exhibited a remarkable resemblance to Greek cinema: from the documentary schools of Zagreb and Ljubliana, with their emphasis on animated cartoons and short films, to the young Yugoslav directors of the 1950s, who made films dealing with modern issues as well as historical works on WWII and the brave resistance of the Yugoslav people. The distinguished director of the film, Aleksander Petrovic, with a host of awards and distinctions to his credit, in his film “I EVEN MET HAPPY GYPSIES” brought to the big screen snapshots from the everyday life of the Gypsies in his country: their sorrows, loves, passion and all their moments of human feeling. Special mention is made to the music of the film and to the superb photography of Tomislav Pinter, who, with his colourful palette, gives us a beautiful portrait of Gypsy life, which is very close to reality. The film won numerous awards.
