The programme begins with comments by the writer, Mona Mitropoulou, that, after such films as “Solaris” and “2001 Space Odyssey”, filmmakers sought innocence in the hyper-earthly. In this spirit, Richard Donner filmed the first in the series of “SUPERMAN” films in 1978. This was based on the well-known comic book series, whose hero, a popular prototype of a new star, a super-man from the planet “Krypton” who champions those who are unfairly treated and underprivileged. "The Nietzschean elements played to rather comic effect, while the Christian elements were watered down for public consumption” – and thus Superman became “comfortably familiar to the audience”. The special effects and large-scale production, the well-worked screenplay, the performance of Christopher Reeve, who became completely identified with Superman and the following sequels (Superman II, III, etc.), as well as the excellent performances of the other actors (Marlon Brando, Glenn Ford, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Suzannah York) are just some of the reasons why the films were so successful.
