Kurosawa's "THE QUIET DUEL" is a film adaptation of Kazuo Kikuta's stage play, although the film and the play differ in the way they end. It is the filmmaker's first production that was not made in TOHO's laboratories, because they were destroyed by strikers. The production of the film, as well as of the entire Japanese filmography at the time, complied with the regulations laid down by the American occupation forces. The film attracted the attention of the American forces because of their preoccupation with the prevention of venereal diseases. The hero, an army doctor, after accidentally contracting syphilis during a surgery at the front, returns to Japan after the war. He stays away from the woman he loves and tries to resign himself to accepting his destiny. This is his THE QUIET DUEL. The programme also refers to Toshiro Mifune, the leading actor, and his screen debut in this film, and includes quotations from the director about his film.
