Martin Scorcese's film is set in 19th-century New York and pictures the city's underworld at that time. What sets this film apart from his other productions, like "STREET SCENES", "GOOD FELLOWS", and "CASINO", is, according to the director himself, that "in the other films, the main characters come from Sicily, are independent and support one another […] In the film " GANGS OF NEW YORK", the underworld […] is an admixture of Irish, Dutch and other nationalities […], with strong political leanings". The film's dramatic core is the revenge of an 8-year old boy called Amsterdam, played by Daniel Day Lewis, for the death of his father, an Irish immigrant, who is killed in a fight with the established inhabitants.
There is a particularly interesting note at the end of the programme that reads: "The film is a fresh look at the ethnic composition of the American nation, far removed from the genre of the romantic western and Griffith's passionate chauvinism".
