In "THE THIRD MAN", a milestone in the British cinema, Carol Reed turns to best advantage Graham Green's uneven script and makes a superb thriller worthy of a Hitchcock production. The film is set in Vienna, immediately after World War II, in a town divided into four parts with shelled buildings superbly photographed by Robert Krasker, who wan an Oscar for Best Photographer, although Reed had been nominated for Best Director. It was one of the earliest films made during the cold war. Apart from Krasker's photography, the film's assets included superb performances, notably Orson Welles', who is credited – in the critic's opinion – with the fathership of the film. The review refers to the films directed by the illustrious Orson Welles and his vital catalytic role as an actor in films by other directors.
