Ms. Mona Mitropoulou, the critic, concludes the review with the words: "This film tells a whole story". She first refers to Bernardo Bertolucci's earlier filmography, including "BEFORE THE REVOLUTION", "PARTNER", and "CONFORMIST". She concludes that in this last film, Bertolucci does away with his Mediterranean characters and focuses on a middle-aged disillusioned American in Paris – played by Marlon Brando – disappointed with his life, who shares endless sexual experiences with Maria Schneider, a beautiful young woman, who emerges as "the passive sex symbol of a whole generation". "LAST TANGO IN PARIS" is seen by attackers and supporters alike as the director's leaning towards "sexuality". Ms. Mitropoulou, however, stresses that "neither the attackers nor the supporters discerned the catalytic attitude, as it were, towards 'sex'", adding that "this attitude is dictated by his Christian conscience that we come across in Fassbinder […], where the director renders in a selective, or rather dialectic way, through the main character's monologues and his efforts to rise to the young woman's challenges, the catalytic power of imagination over desire". Bertolucci marks the beginning of sexual emancipation in the cinema.
