In "FANNY AND ALEXANDER", Bergman abandons the severe manner of his earlier productions for the sake of a rather more cheerful mood in films like "SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT" and "ALL THESE WOMEN". Without being autobiographical, the film includes scenes from his personal memories, as well as scenes from his earlier films: it's Christmas 1906 and Alexander with his sister Fanny are celebrating with the rest of the family at their grandmother's house.
