The gathering of 5,000,000 young people at Woodstock was recorded by director Michael Waldy, who was assisted by Soonmaker and Scorcese in editing 120 hours worth of material down to a 3-hour long film. Their superb editing skill, the use of visual tricks, such as the triple screen, which Abel Gance introduced in his "Napoleon", and the overlapping scenes, extend and enrich musical performances, the main mode of expression for the flower children's revolution. Woodstock was a romantic movement, a farewell message of an entire generation who was unable to conform to the violence of their time.
