Program
Long-winded program, which in the beginning provides briefly the filmography of the film maker and his "boisterous celebrity". Characterizes LOLA MONTEZ as the "pinnacle of the art of Ophüls", a movie maker who cared, obstinate to the times, mainly for the artistic success of his films. The program mentions, also, the influences from the Viennese school and underlines the "full of emotion and sensuality style" of the film maker. Adds that exactly because the film maker illustrates the personalities with cynicism and without any trimmings, it is hard for the spectator in the beginning to identify with the characters, like the dancer LOLA, that is eating away on diamonds. The program singles out Christian Matra's photography and the performances of Martine Carole and Peter Ustinov. Finally, it is noted that the use of color in the film, as well as the "contradictory guise of animate and inanimate" were particularly pioneering for their time.
