After the great international success of NANOOK, Flaherty with his wife and brother stayed for two years (1923-4) in Sawai, one of the Samoa islands of Polynesia, along with the local Maori, in order to find among them the performers for this film of theirs. The film, which is a lyric poem with its theme the last Paradise, had a favorable response from the world critique, in the USA, Germany and England though it was met with enormous failure (bombed).
