Claude Autant - Lara started his career in the cinema as set designer along with the director Marcel L'Erbier. His first film FAIT-DIVERS has all of the characteristic features of the avant garde (new wave). He continues with the MARRIAGE OF THE RAG (LE MARRIAGE DE CHIFFON) and the movie DOUCE (SWEET OR LOVE STORY). The DEVIL IN THE FLESH (LE DIABLE AU CORPS) is considered as his masterpiece, which is inspired from the novel of Raymond Radiguet. The film is "cinematographic poem, a true symphony of joy and despair, a profound touching movie rendering of the tough joy and the tender despair of youth".
The film is an example of the mark of the French School of Cinema, a point of inspiration of the later cinematographers worldwide.
Micheline Presle and Gérard Philipe are the stars.
