Carlo Lizzani is one of the most conscientious social directors of Italy who prepared and created the Neo-realist Movement. He worked with several directors for the screen play of their films.
The major theme of his inspiration is the reflection of the Italian fascism and its obvious or underlying effects.
He shot different documentaries and in 1951 the film ATTENTION! BANDITS! (ACHTUNG! BANDITI!) which is involved socio - politically with the resistance. In 1952 he shoots AT THE END OF THE METROPOLIS (AI MARGINI DELLA METROPOLI) where he introduces the social issue in a police plot and in 1953 THE CHRONICLE OF POOR LOVERS (CHRONACHE DI POVERI AMANTI). In THE VERONA TRIAL (PROCESSO DI VERONA) (1963) as in THE CHRONICLE OF POOR LOVERS he is involved again with fascism where he manages with his fighting theme to combine a lyrical emotionality.
