The BELLE OF CALCUTTA by John Sturges in a screen play by Millard Kaufman is based on the novel of Tom Camals.
The area of the cinema and the themes from which it is inspired are directly associated several times with history. When a great historical event lasts the cinema is trying to reinforce the view of the one who watches it. For example during the Second World War we had films like, WHY WE FIGHT, MRS MINIVER. "When an event comes to an end we have in the films that are an appraisal trying to look at things in a more objective perspective. When a long time has gone by, we have the films where the wake of the event is embellished with a lot of melodrama or with a detached look and music".
In the second category belongs the film THE BELLE OF CALCUTTA which owes its success not so much to the inventive screen play as it does to the plethora of the well-known actors starring in it, among which, Frank Sinatra and Gina Lologrigida.
