Program of the Pyrgos Cinema Club, a branch of the Greek Film Archive. Screening of the film "THE RULES OF THE GAME " by Jean Renoir.
The program begins with an analytical credit and an introductory paragraph in the analytical note that follows, which is an excerpt from the “History of the Cinema” by the French theorist of the cinema Georges Santoul.
The introduction begins with Renoir’s own declaration that he attempted to create a "merry drama” when he undertook filming following the signing of the Munich Treaty.
The beginning of the first paragraph attempts to summarize the film’s main narrative axis. "The Rule of the Game” is the lie, a law of the proper world, which, when broken, leads to destruction. It is also the prohibition to mix social classes".
Renoir attempted to create a new "MARRIAGE OF FIGARO” on the eve of a fatal war, though without succeeding, according to the critics. "At the time of a ridiculous peace", Santoul says, " THE RULES OF THE GAME” announce in advance the farces and the tragedies of a ridiculous war".
The film was received with disapproval and was backed off from the movie theaters a little later, a few days before the breakout of the war, when the military bowdlerization prohibited it, characterizing it "detrimental to the morale".
