ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΗ ΛΕΣΧΗ ΛΑΡΙΣΗΣ - ΠΗΓΗ ΤΗΣ ΠΑΡΘΕΝOY, Η

Program of the Larisa Cinema Club, Branch of the Greek Film Archive. The front cover mentions the institutions associated with the screening, the movie theatre, as well as the screening times and halls. The jet records the title of the film to be screened, "THE VIRGIN SPRING" by Ingmar Bergmann, as well as the film’s cast. The note (edited by B.V., probably Barbis Vozelas), begins with the presentation of the “unknown” Ingmar Bergmann, as this is the first time a film of “one of the three great directors of the Swedish school” is screened here. It goes on to present the film, which is based on a Swedish legend of the Middle Ages, influenced in turn by the ancient legend of the Nymph Arethousa, who is turned by the goddess Artemis into a spring in Sicily, in order to be saved from the chase of the river Alpheios. A little after the domination of Christianity in Scandinavia, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, a virgin, is raped and then killed by a team of drunk shepherds who, on that very night, seek asylum at her father’s home. The note praises the director’s dexterity. Bergman is “a true poet of the camera”, an “epic narrator”, who conveys «with his tough realism and without special «effects» that secret shiver one feels only in ancient tragedy”. The author makes a special mention to the scene of the rape, arguing that virginity has never been praised as much as in this violent and “dirty” scene.
