"It's an allegorical, metaphysical film…". The programme also refers to Byzantine art and the great Spanish painters. "The drama of Ivan the Terrible is not only the outcome of the Tragedy of Authority, but also a consequence of his distressing situation as a human being". The programme concludes with reference to Prokofiev's music and, naturally, Cherkasov's acting.
